Young and old, everyone loves SnoBiz

Popular downtown business a hit during hot summer months

Jasper, Alabama — Rain or shine, the SnoBiz snow cone stand provides everyone, young or old, with the refreshment of a variety of snow cone flavors throughout the scorching summers. Fourteen-year-old Michael Tedford, a frequent customer at SnoBiz, said his favorite flavor is Georgia Peach, which Dawn Kamplain, owner of SnoBiz, said is a favorite among many customers. She said another favorite is vanilla with creme.

“It tastes just like homemade ice cream,” she said.

The two favorite flavors for young children is frog in a blender and tiger’s blood because of the names, Dawn said.

“(Frog in a blender) is green apple with black cherry in the center,” she said.

Dawn said the children are some of her most important customers. One day, she even reopened the stand to make a snow cone for a 2-year-old child who was crying because it was closed, she said.

“We’re here to make kids happy,” she said. “So, we opened everything back up, got the ice out of the freezer, and fixed him a snow cone. He was so excited. That’s what it’s all about. That’s what we enjoy doing.”

Dawn said one of the strangest things she’s seen is a man ordered a grape snow cone for his dog.

“He took him to the edge of the bushes over there and let him eat the snow cone,” she said. “I have several customers that come and buy nothing but ice to give to their dogs. They get a snow cone and their dog gets a cup of ice.”

Dawn said she got the idea of opening a snow cone stand from her brother-in-law, Anthony Kamplain, who owned one in Tennessee. She said she thought it would be a way to make money and spend time with her kids too.

“They’re (her kids) involved in sports in their schools,” she said. “I thought this is something I can do to be out in the community and work and still provide, but yet be able to be with my kids and not miss anything they’re involved in.”

She started out in a stationary stand in Parrish three years ago. Two years ago she moved to a mobile stand because it would give her a chance to work at events.

“It’s just a better way to go,” Dawn said. “People book us for birthday parties and church events. We help out schools that are doing fundraisers. We’ve helped the Jasper city schools do fundraisers this past year. Also, we did T.R. Simmons Fun Day. Just anyway we can help out and give back to the community.”

Most of the time, she is set up in front of Downtown Foods on 19th Street and she said she loves it.

“You meet people. The kids get so excited and to see their faces when they get a snow cone,” she said. “We enjoy being out in the public.”

Dawn said the new location has been good business for her throughout the summer.

“Even with the rain, we’ve still had business today,” she said. “So, we have lots of people who are true snow cone fans.”

Dawn said her kids – Erin, Justin and Ashley – also help her in the stand when they are not busy with their other responsibilities. She said her whole family, including her husband, Charles, worked at the Jasper fireworks show on the Fourth of July.

“It took all of us to do it,” she said. “We had a great time doing it. We met a lot of people.”

Dawn and her daughter, Erin, said they had so many customers that they couldn’t see the end of the line.

“My husband kept looking out saying, ‘I can’t see the end,’” Dawn said.

“Then, it got dark and we couldn’t see at all,” Erin said.

Dawn said that was when the pressure was on because they couldn’t see how many people they needed to serve.

The opening of the stand depends on the weather each year. It is usually closed during the winter months and reopens in the spring.

“This year we opened the week before spring break,” Dawn said. “Last year, I was actually here until the second week in December because of the weather. As long as the weather permits, I’ll be here.”
